Finding a new career is like dealing with winter in Maine …

Looking out over the deep snow pack in my own dooryard, I have been reflecting on the similarities between dealing with a Maine winter, and engaging in a career change: neither is for the faint of heart!

It’s my belief that in general, we Mainers are tough; we are resourceful. We do what we have to do to survive. We piece together our lives in patterns that are at times unbelievably shocking. Between keeping our homes warm, keeping the vehicle(s) running, caring for family members, and having food on the table – resiliency and toughness are required.

The idea of changing careers is as intimidating as an approaching blizzard, and about as attractive an alternative as getting a root canal. To even think about career change implicitly means engaging in the requisite rigors of professional and personal inventory necessary for this journey.

Anyone who has changed jobs or careers can readily see the similarities between the unpredictability of the weather and the ever changing current in the job market. Too many forces beyond one’s control can send the job seeker in a direction totally different from what he or she had planned.

The internet makes information readily available, but how does one decide who to listen to and what process to follow?

In forecasting the weather, technology fuels the prediction models. Even Kevin Mannix (Channel 6 WCSH ) acknowledges that “forecasting the weather for New England isn’t the easiest thing to do, and it’s particularly difficult in the winter!”
